April is Diversity Month, a time to recognize and celebrate other cultures and populations. Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act

WIOA is landmark legislation that is designed to strengthen and improve our nation’s public workforce system and help get Americans, including youth and those with significant barriers to employment, into high-quality jobs and careers and help employers hire and retain skilled workers.

 Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology Development Act

The mandate of the Commission is to research and recommend ways to improve the recruitment, retention, and representation of women, underrepresented minorities (namely, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and American Indians), and persons with disabilities in science, engineering, and technology (SET) education and employment. Commission exploration of the status of these underrepresented populations in SET has reaffirmed the nation’s absolute economic and social imperative to ensure that all U.S. citizens enjoy full participation at all levels of SET education and the SET workforce.

Civil Rights Act of 1991

The Civil Rights Act of 1991 is a United States labor law, passed in response to United States Supreme Court decisions that limited the rights of employees who had sued their employers for discrimination. The Act represented the first effort since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to modify some of the basic procedural and substantive rights provided by federal law in employment discrimination cases. It provided the right to trial by jury on discrimination claims and introduced the possibility of emotional distress damages and limited the amount that a jury could award. It added provisions to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protections expanding the rights of women to sue and collect compensatory and punitive damages for sexual discrimination or harassment.

National Security Diversity and Inclusion Workforce Act of 2019

A bill to improve diversity and inclusion in the workforce of national security agencies, and for other purposes.

American Rescue Plan Act of 2021

$1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed by the 117th United States Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden on March 11, 2021, to speed up the United States’ recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing recession. First proposed on January 14, 2021, the package builds upon many of the measures in the CARES Act from March 2020 and in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, from December.

Innovations in Mentoring, Training, and Apprenticeships Act

To direct the National Science Foundation to provide grants for research about STEM education approaches and the STEM-related workforce, and for other purposes.

Every Student Succeeds Act

The purpose of this act was to replace and update the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which was signed into law in 2002.  Like NCLB, ESSA reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965. According to the statement of purpose in ESSA, “The purpose of this title is to provide all children significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement gaps.”

Higher Education Opportunity Act

The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA) is federal legislation designed to strengthen the educational resources of colleges and universities and to provide financial assistance for students in post-secondary education.

National Science Foundation Authorization Act of 2002

Strengthening the Nation’s lead in science and technology; Increasing overall workforce skills; and strengthening innovation.
